Optometry. . . has its own built-in job security. No job search needed.

gsrteggie and all the rest of you new grads. You SHOULD be nervous about the economy. Our fearless leader has seen fit to let it go straight to hell while generating what could be a record setting budget deficit. Which you guys will have to pay off.
Given that, here's some poop to consider on jobs.
Your Uncle Sam has a LARGE number of people who'll be retiring VERY soon. A bunch of them will have to be replaced.
The starting pay may not be great but once you're in, you're in. Unless, of course, you elect to molest children or rape nuns and get caught.
My boss, a 25 year old U of Kentucky EE grad, makes around $50K. He's a GS12 level after about 3 years. A recent PR grad I know (with a masters, MA I think)is a GS10.
Of course, the military is a good choice IF you are an officer. The pay sucks until you make O4 (major) but you can do your 20 years and still be young enough to build a second career. Many go straight to a government job.
No, I'm not a gov't recruiter. I don't hold a gov't job and I've turned down and offer for one. However, my work gives me an inside view. There are some down sides to working for Uncle Sam but there are down sides to just about everything. Even SC'd Integras.
DO NOT bother with web sites for agencies that advertise gov't jobs if they have a .com address. You'll wind up paying for free info. Look for .gov sites.
Start here -> www.usajobs.opm.gov and take it from there.
How's that for long winded. Good luck.

The current pay scale for military officers starts out pretty decent. 2nd Lt starts out at around 38-40K yearly, Majors make around 75K yearly right now.
I'm considering becoming an officer in the Air Force myself becuase today's economy scares me

I am the Systems and Operations Manager for a small startup company in Arlington, VA. We specialize in web development, e-commerce, computer technical support, and web hosting. We also provide connectivity (T1) to about 20 companies.
Things are going well and hopefully in about 6 months I'll double or triple my salary, which is quite likely. Wish me luck because I'm looking into Vipers if all goes well.

screw the military.
I was thinking of going into JAG, and basically, after I told them I was no longer interested, they kept calling. and calling. and calling. and calling.
It got to the point where I cussed out a Marine corps officer (major I believe) over the phone, telling the to shut the F--- up, and countless other choice phrases that you rarely get the chance to say to a marine and still live.
Needless to say, My military career was over before it ever started, and they havent called again since.
